Olympic Writing

WALT: Include apostrophes in our writing.

The Rings
There are 5 interlocking rings on the Olympic flag, coloured blue, yellow, black, red and green, with a plain white background. These rings represent the five world continents: Africa, Asia, America, Europe and Australia. The six colours (including the white background) combined in this way to reproduce the colours in every country.

Motto
The Olympic motto is: Citius, Altius, Fortius, which is Latin for: Faster, Higher, Stronger. It was said by Pierre de Coubertin upon the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. This motto was actually borrowed from Coubertin’s friend Henri Didon, who was an athletic enthusiast.

Anthem
The Olympic Anthem was written for the first modern games in 1896. Each subsequent Olympics throughout 1956 had its own musical composition played as the Olympic flags was being raised during the Opening Ceremony.

The Flag
The Olympic flag was created by Pierre de Coubertin’s OWN creative imagination in 1914. There are specific flags that are displayed by cities that will be hosting the next Olympic Games. During each Olympic closing ceremony which is traditionally known as the Antwerp Ceremony, the flag is passed from the Mayor of one host city to the next host, where it will be taken to the new host and will be displayed at the city hall.
